Getting outside is incredibly important for your physical and mental health, however, this can feel a little more challenging in the colder, darker months. That's why we have come up with this guide for helping you get out more in the colder weather.
Benefits
First of all, let's take a look at the benefits of getting outside in the colder weather. The multitude of benefits include both mental and physical impacts; the primary mental benefits include stress reduction, improved sleep, improved focus, increase in concentration, and generally boosting your mood.
In terms of physical benefits, by getting outside you are increasing you Vitamin D levels; Vitamin D is beneficial for your bones, brain, heart, lungs and immune system.
Layers, Layers, Layers
With the British weather, can you ever really have too many layers to hand? Making sure you're prepared for the colder weather makes being outside so much more pleasant. You don't need anything flash or fancy, but having multiple options for layers will make all the difference. It's always a good idea to protect your extremities so investing in a cosy pair of gloves, socks and a hat is vital.
Plan ahead
Whilst it may be unlikely that you'll find a beautifully scorching hot day in the British Autumn or Winter time, it's still best to plan ahead and look for the best possible weather. Check the forecast to see when the weather will be the most mild, and for when there will be the least wind or rain. By planning ahead based on the weather, you're more likely to stick to your plans of getting outside.
Take a friend
One of the challenges with the cooler months is that they also coincide with darker evenings and nights. This can cause many people to feel less safe going out on their own. To help with feeling more safe, we recommend planning your trips outside with either a friend or family member, or even go with a small group. By planning to go outside with others, you are more likely to feel safe, but you are also more likely to stick to your plans of going outside.
Balance
As with everything in life, balance is everything. Whilst there are a number of benefits to getting outside in the cold weather, your health and safety are ultimately what matters most. Take yourself on walks and explore the outside, but make sure you are prioritising your physical and mental well being.
