Garden Bridges: How can I make my garden more accessible?
The essence of accessibility in gardens is to ensure that everyone gets to enjoy the wonders of the outdoors regardless of their personal circumstances.
Needing a little extra help with accessibility doesn't mean that you should have to compromise on your garden; an accessible garden doesn't need to be a boring one, it just needs to be a garden that works for you.
Choosing the Right Garden Bridge
When it comes to choosing a garden bridge that is suitable, there are a number of factors involved.
Garden Bridge Strength
The very basics of any piece of furniture is that it is well-built and structurally sound; when it comes to wooden furniture this relies on the type of wood and the craftsmanship.
All of our bridges are built from FSC pressure treated timber made from quality Scandinavian Redwood to ensure that the bridges are strong, and remain strong through the years. We then take this wood and lovingly craft each bridge by hand in our Lincolnshire workshop.
Garden Bridge Rail Height
Rail height is very important when it comes to safety and accessibility, regardless of the personal circumstances.
For example, if you or someone that uses your garden uses a wheelchair then the high rail bridges may be the best option as it gives a level of security and can give you piece of mind when navigating around the garden. A bridge with a high rail could also be the best option for someone with general mobility concerns as the rails can be used to give a level of support and steadiness. Similarly, if you are likely to have prams or young children around then the high rail bridges may give you peace of mind in terms of their safety and well-being when moving around. Examples of our garden bridges with a high rail include The Japanese Style Garden Bridge, The Rustic High Rail Garden Bridge and The Classica High Rail Garden Bridge.
Garden Bridge Width
Naturally, practicality is an essential element of any purchase. We've mentioned the height practicality but the width of the bridge is just as important, especially if you may need access for a wheelchair or pram.
For example the average wheelchair is around 25” wide and the average pram is around 23” wide and therefore a bridge needs to be able to accommodate for this if this is something you require or would benefit from. There are plenty of options that fulfil this, in a variety of designs. Examples of this include The Europa High Rail Garden Bridge, The Heritage Garden Bridge and The Rambler High Rail Garden Bridge.
